Perhaps one of the most common injuries associated with car collisions is the injury of whiplash. An injury often scrutinized and downplayed by insurance companies and/or the public, this injury is unfortunately all too real and painful for those that suffer from it. The Mayo Clinic defines whiplash as a “neck injury due to the forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, like the cracking of a whip.” (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2018). The cause of whiplash is the head being forcefully and quickly thrown backward and then forward. This motion can injure the bones within the spine, disks between the bones, ligaments, muscles, nerves and other tissues of the neck. (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2018).
Common symptoms and signs of whiplash include neck pain, stiffness and headaches. More severe cases of whiplash can even cause blurred vision, ringing in the ears, sleep disturbances, irritability and even depression. The Mayo Clinic also emphasizes that signs and symptoms do not always develop immediately after a car collision—sometimes it can take up to 24 hours before any signs or symptoms are experienced. (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2018). It is important that after a car accident, if you begin to feel even the slightest bit abnormal, that you go see your doctor immediately to be checked out so to hopefully avoid symptoms becoming worse.
