Let’s be honest about seatbelts: they’re uncomfortable and can be constricting. However, when
it comes to surviving a car accident, there is no greater safety precaution to be taken than wearing your
seatbelt. Recent studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that, by wearing a
seatbelt, front-seat passenger car occupants reduce their risk of fatal injury by 45%, and the risk of
moderate injury by more than 50%. Still, according to recent studies cited by The Columbus Dispatch
show that 1 in every 5 Ohioans do not wear their seat belt when in a vehicle. Furthermore, according to
Nationwide Children’s, car crashes are the #1 cause of death among children in the United States; many
of those fatalities being preventable if the child were properly restrained in the vehicle. This is the reasons why you should wear your seatbelt always while driving.
Even if your car trip will be a short one, it is imperative that you wear a seat belt, and that you make sure all passengers in your vehicle are properly restrained as well. In Ohio, it is against the law for a driver and any front-seat passenger not to wear a seatbelt. Furthermore, every child under the age of 8 must ride in a properly restrained booster seat—unless they are over the height of 4’9’’. As such, by not buckling up properly, not only are you putting your life in danger, but you are also in defiance of the law.
Car crashes are often unforeseen and unpreventable. As such, take the initiative to follow Ohio Law and buckle up to protect yourself. Remember, if in the unfortunate event you are involved in a car collision, the law firm of Daniel L. Jacobs Jr., LLC is here to fight for you.
